Religion, Nature, and Ecology – 2025 AAR Reception
Religion, Nature, and Ecology ISSRNC Reception
Friday, November 21st | 5:00-8:00 pm
Publico (11 Dorchester Street) | The Garden Room
Boston AAR 2025
ISSRNC and the FORE invite friends and colleagues interested in intersections among religion, nature, and culture for fellowship, light refreshments, and interesting conversation. We will feature a Q&A with Melanie Harris on her new edited volume Preaching Black Earth as well as remarks from Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim, founders of the Forum on Religion and Ecology.

Harris’ book is a groundbreaking collection that illuminates the powerful intersections of environmental justice, racial justice, and faith. The volume highlights the disproportionate impact of environmental degradation on communities of color, where landfills, toxic waste sites, and other forms of pollution often encroach on Black and Indigenous neighborhoods. It showcases the historic connection between Black preaching traditions, activism, and stewardship of the land, as well as the ecowomanist focus on the interrelatedness of injustices. By centering the voices, wisdom, and methods of women of African descent, Preaching Black Earth offers readers an interdisciplinary, intersectional framework for understanding environmental ethics and promoting
social and environmental justice.
This reception is hosted by the International Society for the Study of Religion, Nature and Culture and co-sponsored by the Forum on Religion and Ecology.
